Seventy Acres of Second Chance: Scissortail Park Became Downtown's Front Lawn

It opened in 2019 on land that was parking lots and prairie dust, joined by a sky bridge to its southern half — and it completed the MAPS argument that a park could hold a downtown together.

Seventy Acres of Second Chance: Scissortail Park Became Downtown's Front Lawn (Oklahoma City Plains News)

Stand on the Skydance Bridge at dusk — the 380-foot pedestrian span modeled on the scissortail, Oklahoma's state bird, wings lifted over Interstate 40 — and the park unrolls below in both directions: 70 acres of lawns, gardens, a lake with paddle boats, and a great lawn built for 25,000 concertgoers, occupying the ground between downtown's towers and the Oklahoma River. Scissortail Park, whose upper section opened in 2019 and lower park followed in 2022, is the largest single piece of the MAPS 3 program and the city's new default setting for being outside together.

Before the park, this was the ragged edge of downtown — surface lots and the memory of Core to Shore, the planning idea that said Oklahoma City's center and its river should be one place. The park is that idea made grass: it stitches downtown to the Boathouse District, hosts the farmers market and the city's festival calendar, and gives the growing forest of downtown apartments what suburbs always promised and cities rarely deliver — a backyard.

The details reward the regulars: the promenade's native plantings doing quiet prairie cosplay, the children's play structures, the café, the winter ice rink that turns the lake district into the city's cold-season living room, and a concert lawn that has already absorbed the kind of crowds the old Civic Center Music Hall lawn only dreamed of.

Cities are remembered by their rooms, and every great one has an outdoor room that belongs to everybody. Oklahoma City built hers in this century, on purpose, with a bird on the bridge — and on a November evening with the towers lit, she looks like she's always been there.
